Research Notes on Drug-Induced Hepatitis

Drug-induced hepatitis (Toxic Hepatitis) is caused by toxic exposure to certain medications, vitamins, herbal remedies, and food supplements. At present, drug-induced hepatitis treatments are not only focused on the cessation of the offending agents. Instead, natural supplements are being considered as alternative treatments to strengthen the liver function. To date, there is no definitive medical treatment for drug-induced hepatitis.

Fast Facts:

  • There are three types of liver toxicity: dose-dependent toxicity, idiosyncratic or hereditary toxicity, and drug allergy.
  • Painkillers and antipyretics that contain acetaminophen are common causes of liver inflammation.
  • Taking more than 4,000 mg of acetaminophen daily can be harmful to your body. Taking more than 7,000 mg can lead to severe overdose.
