William Schaffner, MD, is secretary of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). He is currently chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and professor of medicine (infectious diseases) at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He also is a consultant in epidemiology at the Tennessee Department of Health. 1
