Research Notes on Vaginal Douching

A vaginal douche is a process of cleaning or rinsing the vagina by forcing water or another solution into the vaginal cavity. Reasons women give for douching include washing away menstrual blood, to avoid vaginal odors and after sexual intercourse.1 The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggest that women avoid douching unless under physicians advice.2

Fast Facts:

  • It is estimated that 20 to 40 percent of American women douche regularly.2
  • Douching can spread vaginal infections into the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.2
  • Most doctors agree that allowing the vagina to self-clean and taking daily baths and showers will keep the vagina healthy.2
