Research Notes on Does Bromelain Work
Clinical studies revealed some evidence that bromelain may be comparable to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in relieving pain and inflammation.1 It is a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples and has been approved to treat swelling and inflammation following surgery in Germany.2 Consult a health care provider prior to starting therapy with bromelain; more clinical studies are needed to show efficacy.

- Bromelain is classified as an herb, extracted from the pineapple plant Ananas comosus.3
- It may be a treatment option for conditions such as blood clots, cancer, gout, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. It may also work as a digestive aid, aid in burn debridement, and reduce sinus symptoms.4
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased menstruation are some side effects associated with bromelain.2
- Bromelain is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
