Research Notes on Divalproex and Pregnancy

The anticonvulsant medication divalproex is typically only recommended for use during pregnancy if the benefits to the mother substantially outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed divalproex as a category D drug, indicating that there is evidence that exposing a developing fetus to divalproex can result in physical abnormalities. The most common birth defect associated with divalproex is spina bifida.1

Fast Facts:

  • The risk of the development of spina bifida is approximately 1%-2%.2
  • Divalproex may also inhibit the ability of the blood to clot, endangering both mother and baby during delivery.2
  • Breastfeeding mothers should be aware that divalproex is excrete in breast milk. The effect on the nursing infant is currently unknown.2
