Research Notes on Divalproex Uses
Divalproex is a prescription medication, used for the treatment of epilepsy, mania, (manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder), and migraine prevention. Divalproex is available in several forms, including regular delayed-release tablets, extended-release tablets (divalproex ER) and sprinkle capsules. Both the regular delayed-release tablets and sprinkle capsules are approved for the use of epilepsy only. Although the extended-release tablets are the only form approved for the use of mania and migraine prevention, many physicians will prescribe any of the three forms of divalproex for all conditions. Divalproex helps to increase the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, which helps to prevent abnormal brain signals that can lead to a seizure.1
