The most commonly reported side effects associated with the use of the anticonvulsant medication divalproex include nausea, shakiness, and headache. Some divalproex users reported diarrhea, hair loss, insomnia, and weight gain. Although rare, should you experience symptoms of pancreatitis, severe depression, or a worsening of seizures, contact your physician immediately.1

  • Although not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its use, divalproex is sometimes used to control manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder or to prevent migraine headaches.2
  • If you experience side effects of divalproex that do not subside once your body becomes accustomed to the medication, or that seem especially bothersome, your physician may recommend changing your dosage or dosing schedule.3
