Research Notes on Divalproex Dosage
There is no standard dosing regimen for divalproex, as your dosage is typically dependent on several factors such as your age, weight, and the reason your physician has prescribed this medication. When attempting to treat manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder, a dosage of 750mg per day is usually recommended. When treating epileptic patients for seizures, the dosage of divalproex needed will be calculated at approximately 10-15mg per kilogram of body weight.1
Fast Facts:
- Divalproex is sometimes prescribed in an effort to prevent migraine headaches. The standard dosage of divalproex in this case is 250mg taken twice each day. Dosages may be increased up to 1,000mg each day.2
- Divalproex can be taken with food if stomach upset occurs.1
- It is important that you take your medication exactly as directed. Do not suddenly stop taking divalproex as withdrawal symptoms may occur.1
