Research Notes on Dipsogenic Diabetes Insipidus

Dipsogenic diabetes insipidus, one of four types of diabetes insipidus, is caused by a change in brain function and the way it regulates thirst.1 Dipsogenic diabetes insipidus causes an increase in thirst which subsequently causes increased fluid intake. This suppresses antidiuretic hormone, the chemical in the body which, in effect, decreases urine output.2 Dipsogenic diabetes insipidus appears very similar to other types of diabetes insipidus, but can not be treated the same way. A typical treatment of desmopressin, used for central diabetes insipidus, could cause severe fluid overload, water intoxication, or hyponatremia in a person with dipsogenic diabetes insipidus.3

Fast Facts:

  • Dipsogenic diabetes inspidus is caused by damage to the hypothalamus.2
  • There is currently no specific treatment for dipsogenic diabetes insipidus.2
  • Dipsogenic diabetes insipidus is normally diagnosed by performing a fluid deprivation test and monitoring vasopressin levels.4
