Research Notes on Diet Pills and Breast Feeding

Taking diet pills while breast feeding is not recommended. Many over the counter products or pills have not been proven to be safe or effective. These drugs can be harmful to the mother and the nursing infant. Phenylpropanolamine for example, which is an ingredient found in Dexatrim and Acutrim, has been taken off the market after studies found it has been connected to an increased risk of stroke.1

Fast Facts:

  • Ingredients in many medications, herbs, and supplements are excreted into breast milk.2
  • Before starting any medication, be sure to let your doctor know you are nursing.3
  • Sensible eating and regular exercise are the best ways to control weight while nursing.4
