Research Notes on Diastolic Blood Pressure
Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the blood vessels between contractions of the heart muscle. It is shown as the bottom number in a blood pressure reading. High diastolic readings are possible indications of a higher risk of stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure.1
Fast Facts:
- A diastolic reading of 60 or less may be considered hypotensive.2
- A distolic reading higher than 90 may be considered as a hypertensive reading.2
- Diastolic readings between 80 and 89 are sometimes considered pre-hypertensive.2
