Research Notes on Diastole
Diastole is a medical term that is used to describe the period of time in which the heart fills with blood after contracting to push blood from the muscle as the heart beats.1 Ventricular diastole is when the ventricles are in a relaxed state.1 When the atria are relaxed it is called atrial diastole.1
Fast Facts:
- Also described as the resting phase of the cardiac cycle.2
- Diastolic pressure is the amount of pressure in the heart as it relaxes. Used in a description of blood pressure, it is the bottom number of the reading.1
- The normal diastolic pressure in an adult is 80mm Hg.2
