Research Notes on Diagnostic Tests for Crohn's Disease
Diagnostic tests for Crohn's disease include laboratory and imaging tests. Your doctor may perform a blood test to eliminate other causes of your symptoms.1 A colonoscopy allows the doctor to take samples of tissue from the colon to confirm a suspicion of Crohn's disease.2 Your doctor may also use a sigmoidoscopy or CT scan to aid in a diagnosis.1
Fast Facts:
- A barium enema enables your doctor to evaluate your large intestine. It is not considered one of the most accurate ways to diagnose Crohn's disease.2
- If other tests have been negative, but your doctor suspects you do have Crohn's disease, a capsule endoscopy may be performed.1
- A stool analysis can be used to distinguish between Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome.2
