Research Notes on How is Bipolar Disorder Diagnosed
Bipolar disorder is diagnosed by its symptoms and the amount of time you’ve experienced these symptoms. A family history may also be taken. When diagnosing bipolar disorder your health care professional will do a physical exam and a psychological evaluation. You may also be evaluated for other mental illnesses at that time.1

- Lab tests and imaging tests are not useful in diagnosing bipolar disorder.2
- Some people may go as long as 10 years before a diagnosis is made.3
- Approximately seven out of 10 people with bipolar disorder are misdiagnosed at least once.4
- Symptoms of bipolar disorder include elevated mood (mania) and episodes of depression.5
