Research Notes on Diabulimia Symptoms
Diabulimia is the combination of diabetes and bulimia. Weight loss, excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, nausea, fruity-scented breath, and erratic blood sugar control are the most common symptoms.1 Skipping insulin injections to prevent weight gain can lead to a life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis which can cause death if left untreated.2
Fast Facts:
- Muscle atrophy, GERD, proteinuria, dehydration, edema, high cholesterol, kidney damage, heart damage, and osteoporosis are severe symptoms of diabulimia.3
- A study of women diagnosed with type-1 diabetes resulted with one-third of 450,000 skipping insulin injections to lose weight.2
- Diabulimia is more prevalent in female teenagers and young women.4 American Diabetes Association predicts approximately 30 to 40 percent of female teens and young adults alter or skip insulin to control weight.1
- Early warning signs include binging and purging, increased use of laxatives, hand irritation, blood shot eyes, skin flush in neck and face area, and the use of mouthwash or toothpaste to mask scent of vomiting.5
