Research Notes on Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes. The word "neuropathy" means nerve disease. Diabetic neuropathy is a condition in which nerves are damaged as a result of high blood sugar levels. Diabetic neuropathy symptoms can range from pain and numbness in the extremities to problems with the digestive system, urinary tract, blood vessels and heart.1

- The most common nerves affected are those of the hands and feet.2
- Diabetics who smoke and drink alcohol are most likely to develop neuropathy.2
- About half of all diabetics will eventually develop nerve damage.3
