Research Notes on Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening complication of diabetes or untreated diabetes mellitus. DKA is usually seen in people who have type 1 diabetes. DKA is a state of inadequate insulin levels resulting in high blood sugar. Untreated DKA has a high mortality rate.

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis develops when you have too little insulin in your body
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis is most common in people who have type 1 diabetes
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms can include, excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weakness or fatigue, shortness of breath, fruity-scented breath and Confusion
  • Emergency treatment is fluid replacement, electrolyte replacement and Insulin therapy
  • Untreated diabetic ketoacidosis can be fatal
