Research Notes on Diabetic Heart Disease
Diabetics are at a higher risk of developing heart disease than nondiabetics. People with diabetes who have heart disease have a life expectancy that is about eight years less than other people.1 Diabetics with high blood pressure not only have a greater risk of having heart disease, but have a significant risk of having a stroke or kidney disease.2 If you are diabetic, there are lifestyle changes that you can make to prevent heart disease.
Fast Facts:
- By keeping your blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure near or at target numbers, you can prevent or control heart disease.2
- Diabetics who have already had a heart attack run a greater risk of having a second one.3
- Eating a heart healthy diet, exercising, and maintaining a healthy weight can help to prevent heart disease.2
