Research Notes on Diabetes in Women
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, about 9.1 million women in America have diabetes, and about one-third aren't even aware of it. Women who suffer from diabetes have a higher risk of developing vaginal infections and complications during pregnancy. In addition, women who do not suffer from diabetes are at risk of developing gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Cardiovascular disease risks for women with diabetes have increased 23% over the past thirty years, compared to a 27% decrease in risk for women without diabetes.1
Fast Facts:
- Women with diabetes have a 50% greater risk of diabetic ketoacidosis coma than men with diabetes.2
- 6.3% of women with diabetes suffered a stroke, compared to 2.1% of women with normal blood sugar levels.2
- Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) affects diabetic women 7.6% more often than non-diabetic women.1
