Research Notes on Diabetes in Teens

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body does not make or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. Most teens with diabetes have type 1, however, as more adolescents become overweight and inactive, type 2 diabetes is occurring more often in young people.

Fast Facts:

  • In the United States each year, more than 13,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
  • Physical and mental changes during puberty make diabetes harder to manage and control.
  • In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin.
  • In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin.
