Research Notes on Diabetes and Stomach Problems
The most common stomach problem associated with having diabetes is gastroparesis, a type of diabetic neuropathy.1 Diabetics are also more prone to developing celiac disease. Celiac disease is a condition where the body does not properly absorb nutrients, resulting in dietary deficiencies.2
Fast Facts:
- Constipation or diarrhea are common problems that a diabetic might have.3
- Common symptoms of gastroparesis may include abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea, bloating, and weight loss.1
- Approximately one out of every twenty people with type 1 diabetes will also be diagnosed with celiac disease and although not as high, there is also a link with type 2 diabetes and celiac disease.2
