Research Notes on Diabetes and Reproductive Health
Having diabetes can affect a woman's reproductive health. Insulin interacts with two of women's important hormones, estrogen and progesterone.1 A woman will have a rise of blood glucose levels during ovulation and then see a drop of levels during menstruation. Another reproductive health issue found in women with diabetes is yeast infections. Not only does diabetes affect women's reproductive health, but men's as well. In a male, having diabetes may lead to erectile dysfunction or impotence.2
Fast Facts:
- Gestational diabetes is a disease that you get when pregnant, but goes away after giving birth.
- Exercise is recommended for women with type 2 diabetes to help blood glucose levels during menstruation.
- Having diabetes may also lead to a lower sex drive.3
