Research Notes on Diabetes and Peripheral Vascular Disease
Diabetes is known to affect the blood vessels throughout the body, and those in the legs are no exception. It is estimated that one out of every three people with diabetes also suffers from peripheral vascular disease, although they may not be aware of it. Leg pain, numbness, and sores on the legs and feet that don't seem to heal are all warning signs of peripheral vascular disease.1
Fast Facts:
- Maintaining a healthy blood sugar level is important in order to prevent further damage to the blood vessels.2
- Following a healthy low fat diet that is low in cholesterol, quitting smoking, and taking a blood thinning medication (such as aspirin) may all be recommended by your physician if he or she feels you are at a high risk for developing peripheral vascular disease.2
- By treating your diabetes properly, you can lower your risk of developing peripheral vascular disease.1
