Research Notes on Diabetes and Men's Sexual Health
One of the most common, yet least talked about complications of diabetes in men is erectile dysfunction. It is estimated that up to 70% of men with diabetes will develop ED. Men who suffer from type 1 diabetes are more likely to develop impotence at an earlier age than men with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetic men may not develop issues until later in life; however, any time the diabetes is not well controlled, erectile dysfunction can occur.1
Fast Facts:
- Diabetes can be responsible for impotence because it is a disease that has an effect on the blood vessels and nerves in the body.1
- Erectile dysfunction is the first symptom of diabetes for up to 12% of men. Fifty percent of men will experience ED within ten years of their original diabetes diagnosis.2
- There are a number of effective treatment options for dealing with erectile dysfunction and diabetes. Discuss erection issues with your physician in a frank manner. Seek help for both yourself and your spouse.2
