Research Notes on Diabetes and Frequent Urination
Frequent urination is one of the most common early symptoms of diabetes.1 The urge to urinate becomes more frequent when the excess sugar in the body is excreted in the urine, increasing the feeling of pressure within the bladder.2 In addition, the increased thirst associated with diabetes exacerbates the increased need to urinate.1
Fast Facts:
- Because the kidneys are unable to reabsorb the sugar saturated water in the body, the increased urination can lead to dehydration in some people.2
- Fatigue, blurred vision, and weight loss (all symptoms of diabetes) can be attributed to complications from frequent urination.1
- If you suspect that you, or someone you know has diabetes, speak to your health professional immediately.
