Research Notes on Diabetes and Fiber

A diet that is rich in fiber can be beneficial to those that have diabetes. Eating a high-fiber diet helps to slow the digestion process, preventing glucose and insulin levels from rising steeply. Fiber also decreases cholesterol levels, which reduces the risk of heart disease. Heart disease is one of the main complications of diabetes.1

Fast Facts:

  • Eating fiber rich foods may also reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.2
  • There are two forms of fiber, soluble and insoluble.2 It is the soluble fiber that is most beneficial to diabetics.1
  • Good sources of fiber include whole grain breads, whole grain cereals, brown rice, fruits, vegetables, and dried beans.2
