Research Notes on Diabetes and Extreme Thirst
Extreme thirst is a sign of diabetes insipidus, not to be confused with the more commonly known diabetes mellitus. Diabetes indipidus causes the majority of liquids to pass straight through the kidneys. There are four forms of diabetes insipidus, but primary polydipsia causes the abnormally high level of fluid intake.1
Fast Facts:
- Due to the increased fluid intake, diabetes insipidus also causes symptoms such as nocturia, urinary frequency, and bedwetting.2
- Extreme thirst may also be a symptom of "sugar" diabetes (diabetes mellitus).2
