Research Notes on Diabetes and Cataracts
Cataracts are one of the three major eye problems associated with diabetes.1 It affects the area of the eye that sends light to the retina making vision cloudy.2 A regular visit to the ophthalmologist is important to avoid eye problems. High blood sugar has been known to cause eye problems in diabetics, proper monitoring is recommended.1
Fast Facts:
- Blurriness, spots in vision, and sensitivity to glare are the most common symptoms of cataracts.2
- The leading cause of blindness in the 20 to 74 year age group is diabetes.1
- Senile cataracts are the most common type of cataracts, and diabetes raises the risk by 40 percent.3
- Sugar cataracts are another type of diabetic cataract and can occur at any age. They are most common in young adults with improper control of their diabetes. They can grow rapidly and cause complete loss of vision.3
