Research Notes on Diabetes and Blindness
Diabetes is the leading cause of preventable blindness and vision loss in adults.1 The risk of developing eye conditions such as glaucoma, retinal disease, and cataracts, is much higher for individuals with diabetes. As there are no early symptoms suggesting that there may be a problem, the key to diabetic vision loss or blindness is to prevent it through early detection and treatment.2
Fast Facts:
- Each year, pproximately 25,000 individuals go blind from diabetic retinopathy.1
- Keeping your blood sugar levels near normal can lower your chance of vision problems.2
- It is important that individuals with diabetes should their eyes examined on a yearly basis.1
