Research Notes on Diabetes and Amputation

Diabetes increases the risk of amputation. Many people who have diabetes develop complications such as poor circulation and loss of feeling in the legs and feet. This can lead to injuries or ulcers that may go unnoticed. This leads to the possibility of infection setting in. If infection cannot be controlled or gangrene develops, amputation may be necessary.1

Fast Facts:

  • Since smoking can decrease blood flow to the feet and slow wound healing, it may increase the risk of amputation in someone who has diabetes.2
  • Toe or foot amputation is eventually required by about 5% of all adults who have diabetes.3
  • With regular, proper foot care most amputations of the feet can be prevented.2
