Research Notes on Diabetes and Absence of Menstruation
Having diabetes can affect your menstrual cycle. Teens with type 1 diabetes can get their periods a year later than most girls their age.1 Amenorrhea, or absence of menstruation, is not an effect of diabetes but of insulin resistance which can lead to diabetes.2 Women with diabetes should monitor their menstrual cycles like they would their blood glucose levels.3
Fast Facts:
- Always make sure you monitor your blood sugar often to keep it under control.
- Blood sugar fluctuations are normal for diabetics around the time of their periods.
- In some women, the levels are low during and after menstruation.
