Research Notes on Diabetes Statistics
According to the American Diabetes Association, 8% of the U.S. population suffers from diabetes.1 Approximately 1.6 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in those aged 20 or over in 2007 alone.2 Of those aged 60 or above, about 23.1% have diabetes.2

- Approximately one in every 400-600 children have diabetes.3
- Diabetes was the sixth leading cause of death in the United States in the year 2002.3
- $174 billion was spent in 2007 on diabetes care and costs.1
