Research Notes on Diabetes Screening

Diabetes screening is performed through glucose tests. Glucose measures the sugar the body uses for energy. Blood sugar, fasting blood sugar (FBS), blood glucose, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT or GTT), and urine glucose are the tests performed to measure glucose.1 Physicians also take into consideration physical exams, symptoms, and medical history prior to diagnosis.2

Fast Facts:

  • Approximately 23.6 million individuals are living with diabetes in the U.S., and 5.7 million of them are unaware of their condition.3
  • Normal glucose level is 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) but varies according to laboratories.4
  • Diabetes is diagnosed when fasting blood glucose levels are 126 mg/dL or higher.4
  • Fasting blood glucose levels between 100 and 126 mg/dL are considered to be at risk for diabetes.4
  • During pregnancy it is important to be screened for gestational diabetes5; recommended for adults age 40 and older.6
