Research Notes on Diabetes Risk Factors
The exact cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown. Family history of the disease is a possible risk factor. Why some people develop type 2 diabetes and others don't isn't completely understood.1 There are some known factors that can increase the risk of developing it. The known risk factors include being overweight, inactivity, family history, HDL cholesterol under 35, high blood pressure and having prediabetes.2
Fast Facts:
- Those over 45 years of age are at increased risk.2
- Those over 45 should have their blood glucose checked at least every 3 years.2
- Random blood glucose testing should start younger, especially if there are existing risk factors.2
