Research Notes on Diabetes Medications
Currently, there are five main types of diabetes medications which help to control blood glucose levels: sulfonylureas, biguanides, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, thiazolidinediones, and meglitinides. Some of these medications work to increase the production of insulin by the pancreas, like sulfonylureas. Other medications, such as biguanides, work to shut off the liver's production of excessive glucose.1
Fast Facts:
- Thiazolidinediones are a type of diabetes medications that work to improve the body's use of insulin.2
- Some diabetes medications are combined in one convenient pill, such as Glucovance, which contains glyburide and metformin.2
- Researchers continually develop new types of diabetes medications. For example, sitagliptin (Januvia) is a relatively new diabetes medication that is known as a DPP-4 inhibitor.3
