Research Notes on Diabetes Drug Fights Breast Cancer
New research suggests adding metformin, a commonly used diabetes drug, to conventional chemotherapy may help treat breast cancer. Researchers suggest that metformin may even delay the recurrence of this cancer. In mice, metformin suppressed the cancer stem cells that are thought to aid tumor progression.1
Fast Facts:
- In mice treated with chemotherapy alone, tumors regrew. There was no regrowth in mice who received both drugs.2
- Alone, metformin is ineffective in treating tumors.2
- This study is published in the September 2009 online issue of Cancer Research.
