Research Notes on Diabetes
Diabetes is a disorder of the metabolism marked by high levels of blood sugar. Diabetes occurs when the body produces too little insulin or becomes insulin resistant. When food is digested, a sugar known as glucose enters the blood and the pancreas produces insulin. Insulin moves the glucose out of the bloodstream and into the cells of the body to be used as fuel. Those with diabetes may have a problem producing enough insulin. Another cause of diabetes can be due to muscle, fat, and liver cells not responding to insulin properly.1
Fast Facts:
- There are three main types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.2
- 23.6 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.3
- The exact cause of diabetes is unknown; however genetic factors may contribute to its development.4
- Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage, heart disease, stroke, and erectile dysfunction.5
- Diabetes can be controlled with medications, diet, and exercise.6
