Research Notes on Dextroamphetamine and Pregnancy

Dextroamphetamine should be administered during pregnancy only when the benefits to the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any potential risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed dextroamphetamine as a category C medication. Although no well-controlled human studies have been performed on pregnant women, animal studies have shown an increased risk of birth defects and miscarriage when dextroamphetamine is administered during pregnancy.1

Fast Facts:

  • Babies born to mothers who have used amphetamines before delivery are prone to premature delivery and low birth weight.2
  • Women using dextroamphetamine are generally advised to bottle feed their baby as the medication is excreted in breast milk.2
  • Dextroamphetamine is a generic medication that is sometimes sold under the brand name Dexedrine.2
