Research Notes on Dexedrine Abuse
Some patients that take Dexedrine, a medicine used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy, can become dependent on it when taken for a long period of time.1 Dexedrine is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance, which means it has a potential of being abused regularly.2 If a patient suddenly stops taking Dexedrine after taking high doses, severe side effects can occur such as withdrawal symptoms like insomnia and depression.3 Do not share or distribute Dexedrine to other people, as it is unlawful to do so and can cause harm.4
Fast Facts:
- The generic name for Dexedrine is dextroamphetamine.
- Side effects of Dexedrine include insomnia, nausea and dizziness; more serious side effects that should be reported to a doctor immediately include fever, high blood pressure and allergic reaction.5
- Patients under three years old should not use Dexedrine.6
- Dexedrine may slow growth in children, so doctors advise parents to keep track of their child's weight and height.7
