Research Notes on Developmental Disabilities
A developmental disability is any lifelong condition that impairs an individual mentally or physically. Common factors that cause developmental disabilities are brain injury, malnutrition, premature birth, illegal or some prescription drug use during pregnancy, or child abuse. Types of conditions considered developmental disabilities are Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, and fragile X syndrome among others.1
Fast Facts:
- 1.4% of the world's population experiences developmental disabilities.1
- Metabolic disorders considered developmental disabilities are Phenylketonuria (PKU) and hypothyroidism.2
- Rett syndrome is a a degenerative birth defect that is most often caused by a specific genetic abnormality.2
- Most developmental disabilities affect multiple body parts or systems.2
