Research Notes on Developmental Delay
Developmental delay is a significant delay in a child's development that occurs over time.1 Mild delays or subtle lags do not constitute a developmental delay.1 Developmental testing can help determine whether delays in cognitive, social, speech and language, fine and gross motor, and adaptive skills are present.1
Fast Facts:
- 8% of children from birth to six years of age have developmental delays in at least one area of development.2
- The term "globally delayed" is used when all areas of development are significantly delayed.2
- Once developmental delays are identified, an intervention plan targets the specific needs of a child.2
