Research Notes on Desmin Storage Myopathy
Desmin storage myopathy (DSM) is a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder involving the buildup of a protein called desmin in the muscles of certain parts of the body.1 Symptoms may be apparent at birth or may begin as late as age 40.2 There are three forms of the disease; age of onset and symptoms are determined by the form affecting the individual.
Fast Facts:
- The first type - congenital proximal myopathy associated with desmin storage myopathy - is present at birth and involves muscle weakness in the face, shoulder and/or pelvic area, spinal curvature, and/or heart disease.2
- The late onset form - autosomal dominant desmin distal myopathy with late onset - includes weakness of the muscles in the thumb and/or hand.2
- The third form - cardiomyopathy associated with desmin storage myopathy - is characterized by heart disease, appears at various ages and may become life-threatening.2
- Other names for DSM include cardiomyopathy due to desmin defect, desmin related myopathy, desminopathy, and myopathy with sarcoplasmic bodies and intermediate filaments.
