Research Notes on Desipramine
Desipramine is the generic name for the drug Norpramin. Desipramine is a tricyclic type of antidepressant that is an inhibitor for the reuptake of norepinephrine. Desipramine improves a person's mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. It generally helps restore one's interest in daily living. Desipramine also controls impulse, hyperactivity, and aggressiveness in patients.

- Desipramine works by increasing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain that are needed for mental balance.
- Since the introduction of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's), drugs like desipramine are not prescribed as often as they used to be.
- Desipramine side effects may include, nausea, drowsiness, weakness, tiredness, nightmares, dry mouth, skin more sensitive to sunlight, changes in appetite or weight, constipation, difficulty urinating, frequent urination, blurred vision, changes in sex drive or ability, and excessive sweating.
