Research Notes on Dermographism
Dermographism, also called skin writing, is a form of chronic hives.1 If you have dermographism, you will notice that an itchy hive appears within moments of your skin being scratched.1 The hives are usually gone within a few hours, but it can be annoying.1 The cause of dermographism is unknown, but some cases are believed to be linked to allergies or thyroid problems.2 If no medical condition is found to have caused the hives, antihistamines are usually prescribed to reduce discomfort.2
Fast Facts:
- Dermographism is not dangerous, nor is it contagious.3
- About 5% of the population develops some form of dermographism.1
- Dermographism may or may not be a lifelong condition.2
