Research Notes on Depressive Episode
A depressive episode is defined as a persistent sad mood. This can occur when bipolar disorder is present.1 It is diagnosed when the severe depression has gone on for at least 2 weeks. The mood must be different from the person's normal mood.2
Fast Facts:
- Symptoms may include loss of interest in activities, weight gain, weight loss, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and lack of concentration.3
- A depressive episode may be caused by a personal loss, and can appear in people without bipolar disorder.4
- Other causes may include anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, and medical illnesses. 5
- If you concerned about your depression, or that of a loved one, a simple questionnaire can help you understand how serious your condition might be. Try OrganizedWisdom's quiz: How Severe Is My Depression?
