Research Notes on Depression and Suicide
If left untreated, depression can lead to an increased risk of suicide. Of the people who are diagnosed with clinical depression each year, up to 15% commit suicide.1 For every successful suicide attempt, there are four unsuccessful ones.2 The best way to prevent a loved one from committing suicide is to encourage them to seek treatment from a mental health professional.
Fast Facts:
- The number of elderly people who experience depression increases with illness and decline in function.3
- Elderly people who suffer from depression are more likely than others to commit suicide.3
- Severely depressed people are less likely to commit suicide because they don't have enough energy to carry out their plans.2
