Research Notes on Depression and Pregnancy
Depression during and after a pregnancy can have serious consequences for the mother and the baby. Although the number of women who are effected by depression during pregnancy is unknown, doctors believe that it is a common complication during pregnancy.1 It is difficult to diagnose depression during pregnancy because of the similarities of symptoms between pregnancy and depression.2
Fast Facts:
- The risk of developing depression during pregnancy is increased for women who have a family history of depression or are experiencing financial or marital problems.1
- Depression that occurs after giving birth is known as postpartum depression.2
- Symptoms such as feelings of restlessness and irritability that last longer than two weeks during or after pregnancy may be signs of depression.1
