Research Notes on Depression and Alcohol
Alcoholics usually experience symptoms of depression more frequently than non-alcoholics.1 An estimated 40% of people who drink heavily show signs of depression.2 When those same people are not drinking only up to 10% of them experience symptoms of depression. Alcohol's ability to cause a loss of inhibition can be dangerous in a person suffering depression.2 The combination can lead to an increased risk of suicide.
Fast Facts:
- The combination of antidepressants and alcohol can be fatal.1
- The use of alcohol can make it more difficult to make a clear diagnosis of depression.1
- Family history consisting of either depression or alcoholism can increase the risk of developing one or both of them.2
