Research Notes on Depression Treatment
The course of treatment for depression varies according to the severity of the depression.1 Most mental health professionals will use antidepressants as a first option.2 Psychotherapy can also be used in conjunction with antidepressants to treat depression.2 It is considered one of the most effective ways of treating depression. Another treatment, electroconvulsive therapy, is used when antidepressants and psychotherapy have not been effective.2
Fast Facts:
- Researchers are studying the effectiveness of mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in treating depression.3
- Antidepressants do not cure depression, but help to control the symptoms.1
- Vagus nerve stimulation has been approved in the U.S. for treatment of unipolar depression and bipolar disorder.
- Most people see improvement in 6-10 sessions of psychotherapy treatment.1
