Research Notes on Depression Medication and Pregnancy
Up to 20 percent of women have symptoms of major depression during their pregnancy.1 Many worry whether antidepressant medication will harm the fetus.1 Stopping antidepressant use abruptly can be hazardous and caution is advised.1
Fast Facts:
- Non-medication treatments for depression should be tried first.2
- Newly-pregnant women should contact their physicians immediately if they are taking psychotherapeutic medication for depression.2
- Some depression medications are not advised during the first trimester of pregnancy due to birth defect risk.2
